One of the privileges given to believers is the ability to access heaven through Christ and communicate with God through prayer.
Throughout Jesus Christ’s earthly ministry, His disciples accompanied him for approximately three and a half years. They observed Him performing countless miracles, curing people afflicted with various incurable illnesses, and imparting wisdom and revelations through His preaching and teaching, which were extraordinary.
The disciples never asked Jesus to teach them how to perform miracles or heal the sick, nor did they ever ask to be taught how to preach or teach. They only asked for one thing and that was to be taught on how to pray.
The Bible says in Luke 11:1 we read,
“One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
Their sole request was to be instructed on the proper way of praying. The Lord’s Prayer should not be regarded simply as a recitation to be repeated in every prayer, nor as a religious ritual to be recited whenever one feels the urge to pray.
While it is beneficial to recite the Lord’s Prayer word-for-word when guided by the Holy Spirit, it was originally intended as a template for the way in which Christ’s disciples should approach prayer.
Apostle Paul, known for composing a significant portion of the New Testament, exhibited a diversity of prayers within his writings. Interestingly, despite his extensive repertoire of prayers, he did not repeat the Lord’s Prayer in his personal devotions.
However, upon closer examination of his epistles in the Bible, it becomes evident that his prayers were imbued with the essence of the Lord’s Prayer.
Whether expressing gratitude, offering praise, interceding on behalf of the churches, or presenting supplications to God, Paul consistently followed the teachings imparted by the Lord to his disciples regarding prayer.
Let us examine the manner in which the Lord instructed his disciples.
In Matthew 6;9-13, Jesus quoted saying:
Verse 9
”Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name”.
In other words, Almighty Father, the creator of all things, you are sacred and worthy of reverence. Your name is holy.
Verse 10
”Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven”.
In other words, reveal your true kingdom to me and to all who earnestly seek you on this earth.
I repent of all transgressions that prevent me from entering into and experiencing your divine presence. I renounce and forsake all sins that hinder me from cultivating a genuine relationship with you.
I put away any agenda of mine that blocks or hinders your Divine will for my life here on earth. Just as you said in Luke 22:42, “Not my will but let your will be done”. I also surrender my will to you, remove any selfish agenda of mine that is not Christ centered as I make your agenda the highest priority in my life.
Verse 11
”Give us this day our daily bread”.
In other words: Heavenly Father, I express my gratitude for the daily sustenance you provide for me, as stated in Psalm 37:25, “I have never seen the righteous forsaken nor his seed begging for bread.” You are the divine provider who nourished the children of Israel in the wilderness with manna from heaven, as detailed in Exodus chapter 16:23-24.
Additionally, you multiplied five loaves of bread and two fishes to feed 5000 people, as recounted in Luke 9:12-17. Therefore, I have full confidence that you will meet all of my needs in abundance, according to your glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
Verse 12
”And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us”.
In other words: Heavenly Father, I humbly ask you to pardon any transgressions of your commandments, laws, or spiritual principles that I may have broken. As you have graciously forgiven me, I also extend forgiveness to anyone who has caused me harm. According to Psalm 32:1, you said
“Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered”.
I now align myself to receive the divine blessing grants to those whose sins are absolved through the sacrifice of your Son, Jesus Christ, on the cross for the redemption of humanity.
Verse 13
”And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil”.
In other words, Heavenly Father, as stated in Romans 8:14,
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”
I humbly request your guidance to steer me away from the temptations orchestrated by Satan and his cohorts, whose aim is to lead me astray and distance me from you.
Heavenly Father, you said in 1 Corinthians 10:13,
“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it”.
I ask your Holy Spirit to empower me to resist any deceitful schemes or malicious intentions that may be implanted in my thoughts and emotions by the enemy, much like Jesus successfully resisted various temptations during his time on earth.
I am grateful for the strength and resilience you have given me to withstand the devil’s tactics.
You said in James 4:7,
“Resist the devil and he will flee from you”.
Therefore, as I accompany you, I am confident that you will empower me to conquer every temptation posed by the adversary and emerge victorious over his deceitful tactics and plans.
Verse 13 continues…
”For thine is the kingdom the power and the glory forever and ever”.
In other words, Heavenly Father, I express my gratitude that all realms in heaven and on earth are under your authority. All honor, reverence, praise, and worship are rightfully yours, as your scripture proclaims in Isaiah 42:8,
“Your glory you will share with no one”.
You are the exalted God who reigns on the throne, superior to all other deities. In your mighty name, I offer this prayer, Amen.
Prayer
I pray that the will of God will be revealed to you in an exceptional way. May the Holy Spirit empowers you and deepen your understanding in Christ.
Declaration
I affirm that I am empowered by God to pray effectively, knowing that our Heavenly Father will hear and answer my prayers in the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
